The current study tests whether people simulate others’ positions in theory of mind. In Experiment 1, we adopted a false belief understanding task from different visual angles to measure whether angles modulate participants’ understanding of others’ beliefs. In the experiment, one person placed a ball into one of two boxes and left. Then, the ball moved into a different or the same box. The participants inferred in which box the other would seek the ball. Crucially, the results revealed that the participants’ responses become worse with the increase of visual angles, indicating that the participants mentally simulate the position of the other in belief understanding. In Experiment 2, we adopted an innovative false belief understanding task to successfully replicate our main findings in the Experiment 1. Results confirmed that the participants indeed mentally simulate the other’s position to understand the other’s beliefs. The current study suggests that embodied simulation participates in theory of mind.
