We intuitively believe that attended information that reaches a state of full awareness will be remembered and thus being reportable. However, our recent findings challenged this intuition by showing that participants were unable to report attributes of a highly visible stimulus (e.g. the identity or color of a letter), even though that information had just been attended and used by participants to perform a task. We termed this effect Attribute Amnesia (Chen & Wyble, 2015). In this talk, I will introduce a series of demonstrations of this exciting phenomenon. Then, I will introduce some behavioral experiments that systematically investigate the mechanism underlying this counterintuitive effect. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the implications of these results and the new directions that this research is taking as I explore connections with other areas of psychology.
