讲座内容:
Cognitive control is the ability to withhold an automatic response in favor of a more appropriate but less evident option; consider the temptation to watch the important football game instead of studying for the big exam the following day. Although this type of temptation is (in one form or another) probably very familiar, and a lot of research effort has been spent on its characterization, the mechanism behind cognitive control remains elusive. I discuss how one can (slowly) chip away at the mystery of cognitive control, by attempting to understand it in terms of more familiar and better-understood processes. In particular, I will consider recent modeling and empirical research on how reinforcement learning, oscillations, and probability estimation can be leveraged to ground cognitive control.
